Portugal has been issuing the D7 visa since 2007.
The visa allows foreigners to enter the country and apply for a temporary residence permit.

The visa and residence permit are intended for financially independent foreigners with passive income from abroad, such as a pension, dividends, royalties, or rental income.
Spouse, children, and parents, can obtain resident status together with the main applicant.
The residence permit is valid for two years.

To extend it for another three years, you must live in Portugal for 1.5 consecutive years or 16 months in total and confirm an income of at least €920 per month.
9 benefits of Portugal D7 visa and residence permit
  • Relocation to Portugal
Holders of the D7 visa apply for a residence permit in Portugal, which allows them to live, study, and receive medical care in the country. Foreigners choose Portugal for its mild climate, high quality of life, and affordable cost of living.
  • Visa-free travel across the Schengen Area
A Portuguese residence permit allows free travel throughout the Schengen Area. Travellers only need to carry their passport and residence card.
  • Access to healthcare
Residents receive free medical care in public clinics. Treatment in private clinics is also more affordable than in many other European countries.
  • Access to Portuguese banking services
Residence permit holders can keep their savings in local banks, take out loans, and make international transfers.

  • Family reunification
Residence permits in Portugal are also granted to family members — spouses, children, and parents who are financially dependent on the main applicant.

  • Low cost of obtaining residence
Applicants are not required to make major investments in the country’s economy. To obtain a residence permit, it is enough to show income and savings and to buy or rent property in Portugal.

  • High-quality education
Holders of residence permits can attend local schools and universities. Institutions in Porto, Lisbon, and Coimbra rank among the best in the world.

  • Comfortable lifestyle
The cost of living in Portugal is lower than in France, Spain, or Italy. A single person spends about €666 per month, while a family of four spends around €2,410, excluding rent.

  • Path to European Union citizenship
An application for permanent residence in Portugal can be submitted after 5 years of legal residence in the country. Citizenship is available to foreigners after 10 years of living in Portugal.
