Financially independent persons can obtain a residence permit in Spain through a national D visa, the Non-Lucrative Visa.
A Passive Income Visa in Spain does not allow employment. It is assumed that the applicant receives income from abroad sufficient to live in the country. Foreigners may register a business in Spain, but they are not allowed to work for the company — only to receive dividends.
To obtain a residence permit, applicants must confirm passive income of at least €28,800 per year. Sources of income may include savings, rental income, dividends, or a pension.

Family members may apply for a residence permit together with the main applicant. In this case, the income requirement increases by €7,200 for each additional family member included in the application.
The applicant must also register at a place of residence in Spain. This can be done by renting or purchasing property — there are no requirements regarding the value or size of the property.
The first residence permit card is issued for one year; subsequent cards are valid for two years.
6 benefits of Spain Non-Lucrative Visa
  • Relocation to Spain
    With a residence permit, a foreigner can live in Spain for the entire period of validity of the document.

    Residence permit holders are required to live in Spain for at least 183 days per year if they wish to renew their status in the future.
  • Visa-free travel within the Schengen Area
    A Spanish residence permit replaces a Schengen visa for foreigners. It allows free entry to any Schengen country and stays of up to 90 days within a 180-day period.
  • Non-investment fast-track option
    The applicant is not required to invest in the country’s economy. They only need to prove that they have sufficient funds to live in Spain.

    A residence permit in Spain can be obtained within as little as four months.
  • Fast‑track to Portuguese citizenship
    As a member of the Community of Portuguese Language Countries (CPLP), São Tomé and Príncipe offers investors a shortcut to Portuguese citizenship, reducing the naturalization period from 10 years to just 7.

  • European healthcare
    Residents of Spain receive free medical care in public clinics. Prices for private medical services are lower than in other European countries.

  • Residence permits for family members

How to obtain residence permit in Spain: step‑by‑step process
How to renew a residence permit for financially independent persons in Spain
The first residence permit card in Spain is valid for one year. The resident has the right to renew the status twice, each time for two years. An application for renewal must be submitted 60 days before the expiration date, but no later than 90 days after the residence permit expires.
From May 20th, 2025, holders of a residence permit based on financial independence will be required to spend at least 183 days per year in Spain in order to be eligible to apply for a renewal. They will also need to confirm that they continue to meet the conditions for holding a residence permit:
  • renting property;
  • receiving passive income;
  • being able to support their family in Spain.
The residence permit is renewed immediately for 2 years, so residents must confirm passive income sufficient for this period, at least €57,600. The income requirement increases by €14,400 for each family member.
How to obtain permanent residence and
 Spanish citizenship
Permanent residence is obtained after 5 years of living in the country with a residence permit. The applicant must prove that during this time they did not leave Spain for more than 10 months in total and spent at least 183 days per year in the country.
Permanent residence status is granted for life, but the resident card itself must be renewed every 5 years.
Spanish citizenship is obtained by naturalization after 10 years of living in the country. Applicants must pass exams confirming knowledge of the Spanish language at A2 level or higher, as well as the country’s laws and culture.
Spain does not recognize dual citizenship, so a foreign national must renounce other passports. Exceptions apply to citizens of France, Portugal, Andorra, and Latin American countries.
