To live in Spain as a digital nomad, you can apply for a residence permit through a consulate or, if already in the country, via the local immigration office.

Eligibility is restricted to remote workers and freelancers earning at least €2,850 per month. While you are allowed to work for Spanish companies, this income must remain under 20% of your total revenue.
You are also required to have a rental agreement or property ownership in Spain.

The procedure takes four months or longer.

The initial permit is valid for three years, followed by a two-year extension, eventually leading to eligibility for permanent residency.

  • Moving to Spain

The Digital Nomad Visa is a national visa that grants the right to obtain a residence permit and relocate to the country with one’s family. Spain is a European country with developed infrastructure, a favourable climate, and picturesque landscapes.
  • High-quality healthcare system
Spain ranks 4th in the world for the qualifications of doctors, affordability, and medical equipment, according to WHO data. Residents receive free treatment in public hospitals if they are registered in the social security system.
  • Status for the whole family

How to obtain residence permit in Spain for digital nomads: step‑by‑step process

How to obtain a residence permit if a digital nomad is already in Spain

Non-residents have the option to bypass the national visa application process at a consulate. It is permissible to enter Spain using a Schengen visa, even if it was granted by a different member state. Once in the country, the digital nomad must file their residence permit request directly with the immigration authorities. Depending on the issuing country of the visa, the applicant is required to present either an entry stamp or a formal declaration of entry. The standard processing timeframe for these applications is 20 business days.
